    Established in accordance with the provisions of Article 31 of the Constitution of the People's Republic of China under the principle of "one country, two systems", the socialist system and the system established for Hong Kong. The basic policies of the People's Republic of China regarding Hong Kong have been elaborated by the Chinese Government in the Sino-British Joint Declaration.

Sino-British Joint Declaration

    An excellent presentation of the Joint Declaration.

Implementation of the Joint Declaration

    In the Joint Declaration, the Government of the People's Republic of China declared that it had decided to resume the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong with effect from July 1, 1997, and the Government of the United Kingdom declared that it would restore Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China with effect from July 1, 1997. This site traces the implementation of the Joint Declaration.

Legislative Council of the HKSAR

    The Legislative Council's expansive powers and functions include entitlement to: enact, amend or repeal laws in accordance with the provisions of the Basic Law and legal procedures; examine and approve budgets introduced by the Government; approve taxation and public expenditure; receive and debate the policy addresses of the Chief Executive; raise questions on the work of the Government; debate any issue concerning public interests; endorse the appointment and removal of the judges of the Court of Final Appeal and the Chief Judge of the High Court; receive and handle complaints from Hong Kong residents; under certain circumstances impeach the Chief Jusitice of the Court of Final Appeal and summon, as required when exercising the foregoing powers and functions, persons concerned to testify or give evidence.

    The site presents a collection of papers describing law in China by geographical region. The analysis of Hong Kong law is presented separate from the law of the People's Republic of China, The Republic of China (Taiwan) and Macau.

    Provides law-related and business information. The Chinese law data is provided by the Information Centre of the State Council Legislative Affairs Bureau.
